Ledgerbound Element Matchup

Master A.R.T.E.—Water, Fire, and Plant counters for grid tactics and action wheel skills.

Last updated:

Elemental counters sit at the heart of Ledgerbound grid fights. OmniMegaSuperCorp trainers phrase the rule as A.R.T.E.Always Remember The Elements — because audit zones spawn elites aligned to Water, Fire, or Plant, and your action wheel skills inherit those types. Matching advantage saves action points, stabilizes flank routes, and prevents wipe resets before artifact rooms or the Vacari insurance boss.

This page teaches the full triangle, when to override raw power for typing, and how to use the wiki’s ElementMatchup interactive component (mounted by the page layout—not inline script in MDX) for quick drill sessions.

The A.R.T.E. triangle

Ledgerbound uses a single three-node cycle:

AttackerBeats
WaterFire
FirePlant
PlantWater

There is no fourth neutral element in preview materials. If both units share the same element, expect neutral damage—neither bonus nor penalty unless gear adds special cases.

Mnemonic devices players use:

  • WFP cycle — say “Water Fire Plant” while pointing clockwise on the triangle diagram in camp tutorials.
  • Corporate metaphor — Water extinguishes Fire audits, Fire burns Plant records, Plant absorbs Water leaks (flavor text from demo tooltips).

Memorize direction, not just pairs: Water → Fire → Plant → Water repeats forever across chapters.

Reading element icons in combat

When you select a unit and open the action wheel with right-click (PC) or left trigger (Steam Deck), each skill tile shows a colored icon. Enemies display the same icons on health plates and intent telegraphs.

Decision flow:

  1. Identify the target’s element.
  2. Select a skill that beats that element if available.
  3. If not available, use neutral damage or reposition for a flank—see Controls.
  4. Spend voucher skill scrolls from Vouchers and Swag to cover missing types before hard rooms.

Mixed squads appear after the Prologue; one Fire add beside a Plant boss is common. Prioritize killing the type your party counters first to reduce crossfire risk.

Party building around elements

Rayna, HULG, and Eldarra skew toward different affinities in marketing shots—HULG as physical bruiser often carrying Fire, Eldarra as lore caster leaning Plant, Rayna as flexible adjuster with Water starter skills in demos. Retail rosters may differ; build for coverage, not symmetry.

Recommended coverage milestones:

  • After prologue — at least one skill each for Water and Fire if your blade is Plant-neutral.
  • Mid claim arc — ensure Plant coverage before botanical archive zones referenced in Story and Setting.
  • Pre-Vacari — consumables that grant temporary element overlays may substitute for missing skills; stock via swag shops.

Camp Planner can note which voucher shop day sells missing scrolls.

Using the ElementMatchup component

The wiki provides an ElementMatchup Astro component on this page with three buttons—Water, Fire, Plant—and a live result line echoing in-game copy: selecting Water reports that Water beats Fire, ending with “Always Remember The Elements.”

Practice routine:

  1. Click each element in random order until responses are instant muscle memory.
  2. Close your eyes, hear an element name, click the counter before opening eyes.
  3. Pair with a prologue rerun, calling out counters aloud during each enemy spawn.

If the component is absent during local development, fall back to the table above—functionality is identical, only feedback speed changes.

Advanced tactics beyond the triangle

A.R.T.E. is necessary but not sufficient on harder grids:

  • Flanking multiplies damage even with neutral element—combine advantage with rear attacks when AP is tight.
  • Environmental tiles sometimes grant temporary element buffs (water pools boosting Water skills in trailer backgrounds).
  • Boss phases may strip your party of one element until you interact with ledger objects—walkthrough chapters will flag those scripts post-launch.

Do not sell gear with +Fire affinity just because the current chapter is Fire-heavy; the artifacts quest rotates zones.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing only highest DPS skill regardless of icon color—extends fights and wastes camp time healing.
  • Ignoring dual-type elites — some enemies show primary icon only until you inspect with a camp bestiary terminal (if present in retail).
  • Forgetting consumables — elemental oils or audit salts may apply temporary beats even when wheel skills mismatch.
