Saves and Autosave

Launch reviews agree on the most painful Ledgerbound system that is not a Vacari: autosave is aggressive, and there is no trustworthy manual save. RPGamer calls it a design that blocks save-scumming and also traps you inside bugs. Jetson describes a late conversation that froze, a reload that skipped the scene, and a file that later refused to open. This page is the practical guide. It is not a promise that OmniMegaSuperCorp will add slots tomorrow. Watch Patch Notes for that.

What retail actually does

Public coverage describes a single-slot, always-on autosave. The satire is on the box: store copy says decisions stick forever. The implementation is harsher than the joke. A misclick in combat, a dialogue option you did not mean, or a cat on the keyboard can spend Resterlude hours you cannot get back.

Festival demos already lacked obvious pause and save menus in early cuts. Later festival builds added rewind and battle setup. Retail still autosaves through story. Treat rewind as a combat tool if your build still offers it, not as a chapter-select.

Steam Cloud is listed on the store page. Cloud does not mean multiple slots. It means the one file can follow you to another PC. If that file is already past a frozen conversation, the cloud copy is also past it.

Why reviewers hated it

The intent is readable. Ledgerbound is a time-management tactics game. If you could snapshot every Resterlude, the comedy about burnout would collapse. The cost is real:

  • Combat misclicks fail optional HR stamps and can force a difficulty drop that costs bonding time — see Difficulty.
  • Dialogue locks file a relationship or a Shareholder scene you cannot politely undo.
  • Bugs become save-corruptors. A freeze mid-conversation can skip the scene on reload and shove you into the next battle, which then eats camp time you never spent.

If you are choosing Ledgerbound for a comfort dating sim with chapter rewind, this is the page that should make you pause. If you already bought it, play like an adjuster who cannot un-file a claim.

Habits that survive a single slot

  1. Read the prompt. Speed-clicking jokes is how you lock a monogamous male route you did not want. Two male interests are monogamous for that playthrough; the rest can be poly with paperwork. Details: How to Romance.
  2. Use battle setup before you commit a turn. Confirm the A.R.T.E. read. Rewind if it still exists, instead of failing into a paid difficulty drop.
  3. Do not rebuild liabilities every night. Swaps cost Resterlude. The autosave will remember the wasted hour.
  4. Verify files after a freeze. Then reload once. If the scene is gone, write down the beat and keep moving. Reinstalling over a bad cloud file can make it worse.
  5. Finish onboarding the night a recruit appears. You cannot raise a bond or change gear until the paperwork is done. Autosave will not hold a “I’ll do it tomorrow” flag if the next battle starts.

Steam Deck and controllers

Preview and launch notes prefer an Xbox-layout pad. The action wheel is right-click on mouse and left trigger on Deck. Touch-screen mis-taps are how SmashPad’s GDC demo burned turns. Pair this page with Steam Deck and Controls. A single-slot game plus a fidgety trackpad is a bad combination.

What shipped, and what is still waiting

Windowed mode and the time-management toggle shipped in Patch #2 (August 16, 2026). Map them on Display & Settings and Time and Burnout. A history log would not restore a stamp, but it would let you reread a scene the autosave already closed — Patch 1 listed missing chat logs as a known issue, and Patch 2 did not advertise that log as shipped. Until it lands, screenshot important paperwork or keep notes in the Romance Checklist.

Reset Battle (title-screen settings) is the Patch 1 escape hatch when a fight or save loops after a depot. It is not a chapter select and will not un-file a confession.

Demo progress does not import. Start a retail save. If a later patch adds slots, this URL stays /system/saves/.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Ledgerbound players.

Does Ledgerbound have a manual save?

Launch reviews say no reliable manual save. Autosave is aggressive and usually single-slot. Confirm in your build’s menus after patches.

Can I undo a dialogue choice?

Treat it as permanent. Rewind, when present, is for combat. Patch 3 shipped a chat log for rereading, not a full story undo.

Does Steam Cloud give extra slots?

No. Cloud copies the same file to another machine. A broken file stays broken.

What should I do after a freeze?

Close the game, verify Steam files, reload once. If the scene skipped, keep playing and report the BuildID.
